Wakefield and Associates - Are they scammers?

I recently got a letter and phone call from Wakefield and Associates claiming I owe $450 for a medical bill from last year. They said they bought the debt from the original creditor, but I’m a bit skeptical. The representative was really pushy about getting payment over the phone, which raised a red flag for me.

I plan to contact the original creditor directly to confirm if they actually sold the debt to Wakefield. Has anyone else dealt with this company before? Are they legit, or should I be cautious? Also, is there a safe way to verify a debt collector’s legitimacy?

Definitely a scam. They called about a debt from 2019 that didn’t exist. I paid it in full to the hospital and finished the plan in 2020. A 4 year old “debt” that was never in collections? Shady.

I wish I’d discovered this sooner. I wasted so much time trying to figure it out. Turns out, its a scam. No idea how they got the info.

People call it a scam and say to ignore it until it shows up on their credit, and then they’re panicking. Just call back and hear them out. You might owe something legit you weren’t aware of.
