How to open a bank account?

I’ve been in a really controlling and abusive environment for a long time, where I wasn’t allowed any independence or the chance to learn basic life skills. Because of that, I’m still trying to figure out how to navigate adult responsibilities on my own, and honestly, it’s been overwhelming. I’ve also developed pretty severe agoraphobia, which makes everything even harder.

Right now, I’ve hit a new hurdle how do I open a bank account?

I’m not sure where to start. What’s actually required to open an account? And once I have one, how do I connect it to something like PayPal?

If you’re more comfy online, Chime and Ally are solid. They’re online-only, no branches but way easier to open an account from home. No scary human interactions required 😅

This post made me tear up. U r doing so well. Seriously. Adulting isn’t a race and you’re learning skills now that’ll serve you forever. If no one has told you today..you’re doing a great job 💙

To open a bank account most banks just require a government issued photo ID like a driver’s license or passport and your social security number.

U can usually begin the process online and some banks even let you complete everything without ever having to visit a branch

If you’re managing agoraphobia online only banks like Chime or Ally can be a great option.

U can handle the entire account setup from your phone or computer and they’ll send you a debit card by mail no need to visit a branch

Once your account is open, connecting it to PayPal is straightforward.

Just log into your PayPal account, head to the “Wallet” section, and select “Link a bank account.” You’ll need your bank’s routing and account numbers, which you can typically find in your online banking portal

Credit unions can be a great option as well. They tend to be more community oriented and usually come with lower fees
Many now also offer the convenience of opening accounts online

You’ll likely need a few basic things:
  • A valid photo ID
  • Your Social Security number
  • A mailing address
Some banks might also ask for a small opening deposit usually around $25but others don’t require one at all.

I just want to say i really admire you for asking this question. Taking steps like this especially after everything you’ve been through takes a lot of courage.

major props to you. Taking back your independence even little by little is a huge deal. Banking can be confusing for anyone starting out so you're definitely not alone in this

You’re doing great. Asking questions and seeking guidance is exactly how we all learn. Don’t feel embarrassed or like you’re behind everyone has to start somewhere.

It’s completely normal to feel overwhelmed when no one taught you the basics. You’re definitely not alone there are tons of people on who had to figure this out later in life too

It’s totally understandable to feel overwhelmed when no one ever taught you the fundamentals. You’re not the only one—plenty of people on Reddit are learning this stuff later in life too.

Do you happen to have any form of identification right now like a driver’s license, state ID or even a passport?

If not that’s going to be the first and most important step before you can open a bank account or access most financial services

Banks and financial institutions are legally required to verify your identity so having a valid government-issued ID is essential
