Caine and Weiner- Disputing an Open Collection

Hi guys, I used to have an auto insurance company around 2 years back. I forgot about them until I pulled a copy of my credit report this weekend and discovered that I have an open collection from Caine and Weiner worth $321.43. The notification claims that I owe this amount for a lapsed policy. I clearly remember canceling my policy with this insurance company when I bought a used car and switched to a different provider that offered a lower rate for my older vehicle.

I am certain that I completed the cancellation process online and even have a vague memory of receiving a confirmation email. I need to check if I have the receipts tho. Anyway, there is no way I am paying for an inactive policy. Is there a basis to dispute the collection with Caine & Weiner?

They send you a debt validation letter. They legally have to prove that you owe the money.

If you have any proof of canceling the policy, like that confirmation email, use it to dispute the collection. Don’t pay anything until they prove the debt is valid.

U can send a dispute to Experian, Equifax, or TransUnion and explain that you canceled the policy. If Caine & Weiner can’t prove u owe the money the credit bureaus will take it off your report. If u find any receipts or a confirmation email, it will help support your case.

It’s important to handle this, but don’t pay unless they prove the debt. You have the right to dispute it.

Check your emails for that cancellation receipt even if it’s a vague memory, finding it could be your best defense.

Ask for proof of the debt. If they can’t provide it, they’ll have to remove it. And if you find that confirmation email, you’ll have a solid case to back up your dispute.
