Some promise to reduce your debt, but how do you tell the legit ones from the scams?

I’ve heard that checking reviews verifying credentials and understanding their fees upfront are key steps. But I’d love to hear from people who have actually used these services.

Need some guidance

Beware of companies that demand large upfront fees before explaining your options. Legitimate firms will assess your situation first

If a company wants full payment upfront before reviewing your case, it's probably a scam. Legit firms usually start with a consultation and charge in phases

Yeah, it’s tough to know who’s legit and who’s just out to take your money. A good rule of thumb if they promise to erase your debt or ask for big upfront fees that’s a red flag. The IRS has legit options like payment plans and offers in compromise so sometimes it’s better to go straight to them.

Check for accreditation with the IRS or BBB and avoid companies that demand big upfront fees. Legit firms will be transparent about costs and wont promise guaranteed reductions. If your tax debt isnt huge the IRS payment plan might be a safer bet.

Yeah, checking reviews, verifying credentials, and understanding fees upfront are key. But watch for red flags:
-Big upfront fees
-"We’ll erase your debt!" promises
-Telling you to stop payments immediately

On the flip side, a legit debt relief company should:
-Accredited (AFCC, NFCC)
-Transparent about costs & risks
-Have real customer reviews

Yep, checking reviews, credentials, and fees is a must! Legit companies won’t demand huge upfront payments or guarantee debt reductions. The IRS has a list of approved tax relief providers, so always verify. If a company pressures you or sounds too good to be true so it’s probably a scam.

Absolutely! It’s tricky with so many options out there. Legit companies are transparent about fees, don’t pressure you and have solid reviews from real users. If they promise instant results or ask for money upfront that’s a red flag.
Have you looked into any specific ones yet?

Good question! A legit company will be upfront about costs, won’t promise guaranteed results and will take the time to review your situation before asking for payment. Scams usually pressure you, charge big fees early on, or make claims that sound too good to be true
Have you looked into IRS programs directly? Sometimes you can handle it yourself or with a tax pro for less money

I hired one of these firms and as soon as I made my first payment they completely disappeared on me. Spent months battling just to get my money back.

I used Optima Tax Relief. They weren’t bad but i feel like i couldve negotiated with the IRS myself and saved the $3,500 fee. They got my penalties reduced but nothing crazy.

Been there, man. Owing the IRS is STRESSFUL.
i would suggest checking the National Association of Tax Professionals site to find legit pros.

I used Freedom Tax Relief and they were awesome. Got my tax debt down to a manageable level, but yeah they charge a hefty fee for their services. It's a business so u have to expect to pay for their help.

Used Optima Tax Relief last year. Not gonna lie, i was terrified. They were expensive but they handled my Offer in Compromise and i ended up paying way less than i owed

Used Optima Tax Relief. They did help, but the fees were no joke. Like… thousands. Worth it for me, but definitely not for everyone. Ask a LOT of questions upfront.

Start by checking if they’re accredited by the IRS as an Enrolled Agent or have CPAs on staff. Anyone can say they can negotiate with the IRS but only certain professionals are legally allowed to.

Honestly the IRS Fresh Start Program is something u can apply for yourself. These companies just fill out the forms you could fill out for free.
