Credit Cards for the Self-Employed?

I’m self-employed and looking for a good credit card that fits my situation. Ideally, I’d like something that offers solid rewards (cash back or travel), maybe some perks for business-related spending, and low fees if possible.

Since I don’t have a traditional W-2 income I’m also wondering what the approval process is like. Are there certain cards that are more freelancer/sole proprietor-friendly?

If you're looking to travel, the Amex Business Platinum is elite but pricey. Great if you can justify the $695 fee. Lounge access, 5x on flights, tons of statement credits.

Capital One Spark Cash Plus has been 🔥 for my consulting business. 2% cash back across the board and no foreign transaction fees. You do need strong credit, though.

I use Amex Blue Business Plus and it’s got 2x points on everything. No annual fee either. But word of warning: Amex can be picky if your income isn’t consistent.

I'm a full time Etsy seller and got approved for the Capital One Spark Cash Select. Nothing fancy, but solid 1.5% cash back. Plus they didn’t grill me about W-2s

Am I the only one who feels like applying for a credit card without a W-2 is like trying to get into an exclusive club with flip-flops on? 😂

I feel you. I applied for 4 cards before realizing that business cards can be harder without an EIN. I switched to sole prop, used my SSN, and got approved for Capital One Spark. Don’t give up

If you travel for work get the Capital One Spark Miles for Business. Solid rewards and you can transfer miles to travel partners👌

Chase Ink Business Unlimited, hands down. Easy to manage, great rewards. I run my Etsy shop off it. Approval wasn’t too painful...just showed a few months of consistent income.

If you’re worried about approval without a W-2, look into cards that accept stated income. Amex and Capital One have been good about that in my experience. Just don’t fib banks do verify sometimes.

your EIN doesn’t need to match your legal name for most business cards. i used my LLC info and they approved me using my SSN + 1099s

I literally got approved with just my Etsy income and a solid credit score. No one asked me for tax docs. It felt... too easy? i’m still suspicious.

I run two LLCs and a side gig. My best combo:
  • Amex Blue Business Plus: 2x points on everything up to $50k/year
  • Chase Ink Preferred: Killer travel rewards, especially for digital nomads
  • Capital One Spark 1.5%: No frills, solid cashback
